(67) Stay or bail?

[Email to the president of the Colorado Association of Psychotherapists sent Sunday, August 10, 2008]

Hi, Ed –

Thank you for taking the time to write such an informative email — even though you couldn’t provide the specific answer I was hoping for, you still helped a bunch.  I suspected that kind of standards/best practices are not well established.

One of the biggest issues I’m working through is learning to identify/express my needs/opinions/feelings/beliefs — when I was a kid, my dad squashed my ability to do that so I’m learning the process now — I tend to get very reactive and angry when someone repeats my dad’s behavior.  So, I’m just trying to figure out if my therapist is really being disrespectful or if I’m over-reacting, or both — I don’t trust my ability to determine that and I question his ability to be objective.  If he is disrespecting me, I don’t think it makes sense to ask him to teach me how to respond to disrespect — I would want to learn that from a respectful therapist.  If I’m just pulling more of my crap, I need to stick around and work it out with him (or I’ll have to go through this again with the next therapist).  So, that is why I’m asking these types of questions.

Anyway — thank you, again!
– Marie
